See Ken Done at HOTA, Gold Coast

If you’re planning a visit to the Gold Coast while staying at Origin House, or making the drive down from Brisbane, HOTA Gallery in Surfers Paradise is a must-see cultural stop. With one of Australia’s most iconic artists, Ken Done, currently on show, now is the perfect time to plan your day out.

Ken Done: No Rules

On display until 15 February 2026, Ken Done: No Rules celebrates the vibrant, unmistakably Australian works of a true national treasure. Known as the “king of colour,” Done’s art is instantly recognisable, eye-catching and nostalgic, with pieces from the 1980s through to today on display.

The exhibition features exclusive works from Done’s personal collection, a collaboration with Australian fashion label Romance Was Born, and an animated feature that brings some of his most iconic paintings to life.

Tickets are priced at $21 for adults, $18 concession, $11 for youth, and children under four enter free. You can pre-purchase tickets via the HOTA website or book a combined ticket and café lunch package for $35.

Explore the Gold Coast

After exploring HOTA, continue your Gold Coast adventure by sampling some of the area’s favourite food spots such as Miami Fish Market, Mio Wraps, Burleigh Pavilion, Rick Shores, or Good Day Espresso.

Keep the good times going with a swim at Kirra Beach or Rainbow Bay, or a hike through Tallebudgera Valley, before making the scenic drive back to Origin House for the ultimate unwind.

Make the Most of It

Whether you’re an art lover or simply a patriotic Australian, Ken Done’s philosophy — “There are no rules. And if there are rules, then you may as well break them.” — is sure to resonate. His art celebrates Australia’s reefs, beaches and coastlines, much like the views you’ll discover along the journey from the Gold Coast to Carool.

It’s such a treat to have an exhibition of this calibre so close by, and you can make the most of it by booking a stay at Origin House here
