Coffee Time
August was a busy month for coffee commitments. Each year I judge at the Royal Adelaide Show and the RAS Fine Food Show in Sydney. The judging for Sydney was held in August and is now only available for entries of coffee grown in Australia.
Some great results were achieved by Coffee Mentality Roasters, Jack Murat Coffee along with entries from Crater Mountain Coffee and Mountain Top Coffee. For 25 years Australian grown coffee has been winning awards at this show even when it was open to internationally grown products.
In addition to judging, it’s been harvest time at Carool. Although it’s a small plantation it takes quite a bit of effort to bring in the crop by handpicking, then processing and sun drying. Traditional harvesting and processing methods have been practised on our plantation for 30 years. It’s one of the reasons, along with the terroir, that has given our coffee its distinctive, award winning flavour.
As both a judge and a grower, August was a reminder of why I love being part of the Australian coffee community. Next up for us will be roasting and brewing and we’re eager to sample how this season’s unique conditions come through in the flavour.
