There are so many day trips we love to recommend to guests at Origin House but the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is definitely one of the most adventurous options.

Opened in 2023, the trail has quickly become a must-do for walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and anyone curious to explore this beautiful corner of New South Wales.

Just 30 minutes from Origin House, you’ll discover old railway tunnels, lush green farmland and charming country towns along a 24km stretch of disused railway line in the Northern Rivers region.

Rail Trail Itinerary Ideas
Here’s how we’d plan the perfect Rail Trail day:

Morning at Origin House
Start your day with our homegrown Zeta’s Coffee beans, brewed using the coffee machine in our kitchen. Fuel up with the breakfast essentials we provide: sourdough bread, eggs and spreads.

Get Trail-Ready
Pack your bikes or plan to pick up a rental from a local provider. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Origin House to Murwillumbah, where you’ll find the trailhead and ideal place to park near the Murwillumbah Railway Station.

Explore Murwillumbah
Drive through the charming small-town centre, admire the art deco architecture and grab takeaway snacks from Keith Cafe to take with you.

Ride to Burringbar (~13 km)
Head south on the trail towards Burringbar. You’ll pass through fully covered railway tunnels, shaded peaceful stretches and plenty of scenic photo opportunities.

Lunch Options
When you’re ready for lunch, we’d recommend a stop in at Teakwood Cafe in Burringbar. You can also pre-arrange a picnic with a local provider, or keep an eye out for farmgate stands for the freshest local produce.

Continue Onward
Keen to keep riding? Consider checking out Crabbes Creek General Store, heritage rail bridges, local artist studios, or nearby markets—depending on the day.

Wind Down at Origin House
After your ride, return to Origin House for a refreshing shower, sunset wines, and a cosy movie or games night.
